Hunting Mature Whitetails The Lakosky Way Book Review Quality Deer Management with Lee & Tiffany Lakosky by Duncan Dobie

W4542FullCover.inddWhen I first heard the team from Krause Publications were going to send out an advanced copy of Hunting Mature Whitetails, The Lakosky Way, I was happy they thought of me but I really didn’t know how I was going to review a coffee table book about the Lakosky’s.  The book arrived a few days later and I set it on the table without even opening it and headed out the door to get in some doe hunting in Western Nebraska with my son. When I got back, I had two does to cut up and package and a backed up email account and a few projects to wrap up and about 4 nights later I finally collapsed on the couch and picked up the envelope and opened it up.

I flipped through and took a look at some of the pictures of Lee and Tiffany and randomly stopped on the chapter “Setting up the Farm: What to look for when buying or leasing.”  I read that chapter from start to finish and I learned more in those 11 pages then I have in the last season of hunting on my own.  I then picked up the book the next night and spent the next several nights reading through the book cover to cover.  I am planning on going back through the book and highlighting the entire book with important notes and using parts of it as a virtual textbook on hunting the Lakosky way.

I have always watched Lee and Tiffany on television with a certain amount of awe and a whole lot of jealousy over the locations that they have been able to hunt.  I have had the chance to meet them on occasion and got introduced to them through a mutual friend Joella Bates.  I even got a picture that day with the three of us.  I tell you this because I think I am like most fans of Lee and Tiffany, I have watched in awe, knew that they worked hard, saw them at some shows and on television and just kind of felt they were a little luckier then most.  Now that I am in the industry, I know that was not the case, they have had some lucky breaks, but these two have earned every opportunity they have gotten and are some the hardest working people I know in this industry.

Reading through Hunting Mature Whitetails The Lakosky Way is not about their rise to stardom although there is a few chapters on that subject in the beginning of the book, the real meat and potatoes of this book are in the several chapters that give real world examples of how they have been able to manage farms and leases and formulate hit lists for monster bucks year after year.  It shares the learning curve they have had and what they have learned year after year as they have grown to almost cult status in the hunting world.

This book provides real tips on how they hunt and why they set up the way they do for each and every hunt and how they are able to harvest big deer year after year.  2010 and 2011 where their best seasons yet and I cannot wait to watch The Crush starting in Q3.  Until then I will be studying Hunting Mature Whitetails The Lakosky Way and preparing my own strategies for the leases and farms that I have permission to hunt here in the Midwest.  Someday I will show them my marked up copy with all of my notes and highlighted sections and ask them for an autograph like every other fan does at the shows but until that happens, I have a bunch of work to do scouting, setting up stands, setting out minerals and finding new leases to hunt from the Canadian Border to Texas for Team HuntingLife to chase our dreams.

Go buy a copy of this book, read it and study it, I can assure you after reading it you will be an even bigger fan of Lee and Tiffany and you might just be able to create your own hitlist of monster buck to target.
