Gear Product Review - Schnee's Hunter II Pac Boots

My very first elk hunt was in 2003 with my father and the best recommendation I received before going on that hunt was to buy a pair of Schnee's Pac Boots.  I made good on that recommendation and bought a pair for my father as well.  That first hunt started with green grass and by the end of the week we were hunting in 18 inches of snow.

Dad In Montana

With a week walking the mountains of the Bitterroot Mountains in snow with sock liners, wool socks and our pairs of Schnee's Pac Boots we had very happy feet.  In fact while chasing my elk he was shot high on the mountain and by the time we got to him it was getting dark and I had fallen and hurt my knee quite badly on a submerged limb in the snow.

The guide looked at me and asked me if I wanted to be extracted off the mountain on horseback and I knew that would be a ton of work for the guide so I said, "I walked in and I will walk out."  I did walk out that night and over the next 3 years I have spent countless days in my Schnee Pac Boots.

Schnee's fit like a dream and I have a couple of recommendations to help you keep your pair of Schnee's in great shape for years to come.  When you buy them also buy an extra pair of liners, some Platicseam Sealer and some Schnee's Boot Paste.  As soon as you get your new boots, cover all of the seams with the seam sealer and let them sit for 24 hours.  Then cover them in boot paste and let them sit for another 24 hours.  Then cover them in boot paste again and wear them for the next several years in happiness.  Keep them well covered in boot paste just before you hunt and month after you hunt and they are dry.  Every 3 months, oil them up and keep them for the rest of your iife.  If the soles run out, Schnee's can resole them for you but the leather uppers will still be in excellent shape.

When hunting in these boots, bring your extra liners and switch liners every day so they can dry out and your feet will always be warm.  In mid afternoon at lunch in wet weather I change my socks and I always wear sock liners and wool boot socks when hunting to wick the moisture away from my feet.  Schnee's has an excellent selection of socks and liners.  I will not hunt elk without my Schnee's boots and most guides I know feel the same way.
