Hunting Tip 161
Make your calling sound more realistic
Have you ever had deer or turkeys come in after you call and look around, and then turn around because they don't see anything that interests them? Well, there are some easy things you can do to fix this problem and you don't have to pay a dime for them!
Before you climb up in your treestand, grab a couple small rocks and put them in your pocket. If a deer comes in to your calling but is hanging up out of range, take a couple rocks out and toss them, one at a time, just to the side of your stand. This will simulate a deer stepping hard, or just walking. This might just get that deer that is hung up interested enough to come in for a closer look.
You can also do something similar if turkeys hang up out of range. Start rustling some leaves around! Turkeys are very loud animals; they are always clawing and the ground looking for food, so if you can simulate a turkey digging through the leaves or grass for some buds, you will sound more realistic! This method can be extremely helpful if you don't have any decoys with you, although it works either way.
