Beware of Deer When Turkey Hunting!

Beware of Dog signs are quite common in neighborhoods or out in the country where nobody wants visitors, but “beware of deer” signs are literally non-existent when you are talking to hunters- except during turkey season.  Let me explain further.  It is inevitable that turkey hunters will come across deer during their hunts.  If and when this occurs, there are a few things you want to think about.  Just as during deer season, if a deer blows, they will alert other animals including turkeys of apparent dangers.  This can quickly end a promising hunt.  On numerous occasions I have been smelled or seen by deer while I’ve had a tom in visual distance.   Turkeys get nervous when they hear a deer blow and will more than likely leave the area.  If you run into this problem with the deer in your turkey woods, use natural earth cover scent to cover your smell and sit extremely still while deer are in your area (even though it isn’t deer season).
