A few thoughts on hunting...
As your host, Masterguide Art Andreis, I have been hunting Alaska since 1969. And, over those years I have seen many changing attitudes on hunting in general. With this thought in mind, we should discuss a few ways that all of us can help in preserving our rights, to continue hunting. Ethical hunting is essential in this day of constant attacks on our right to hunt by the media and anti-hunters. Because few, if any, of us now hunt to survive, we need to be even more diligent of our responsibilities as a hunter. What we, as modern day hunters need to do, is work to insure the survival of any given species. We do this by supporting those organizations that enhance wildlife, coupling this with our taxes we pay on ammunition and other fees for licenses, land usage, etc, account for a significant portion of our nation's conservation funding-from habitat restoration to research.
Ethical hunters abilities and equipment reflect their respect for the dignity of the animals they hunt-shooting skills are practiced-firearms are chosen to provide adequate power and are checked for mechanical reliability. Wildlife behavior and identification are studied. All Federal or State Game laws and regulations are adhered to at all times. Yet, there are other laws involved with hunting, and these are based on morality. They apply with equal force to all hunters. The amount and size of game taken is limited by formal regulations. However, it is even more so by self-restrain in the field. Especially in Alaska, in vast, remote areas one might not exercise the same self-control he would while hunting in populated, highly regulated areas. One can break unwritten laws by shooting at excessively long distances, wounding sub-legal animals, using inadequate equipment or simply by neglecting preparation of themselves for the hunt, as required.
So, when hunting in Alaska, let's all try to be ethical in all we do as we share a commitment to responsible behavior. This will give the media and anti-hunters very little to use against us in the future. Alaska is continuing to change in both game population as well the increase in number of hunters going afield. You should pursue your hunting interests while the time and circumstances are favorable. Our game populations through-out most of the State are doing well and political climate within the State continues to support our rights to hunt.
My major objective is for you to have success on your hunt. With that thought in mind, the Preparation for your hunt can be essential. Therefore, let us know what we can do to help you prepare for your hunt of a Lifetime.
