“The Sound of the String” by Brad Isham Released
AMISSVILLE, VA. February 7, 2012 - In his book “The Sound of the String: An African Bush Country Novel” (ISBN 0615557457), Brad Isham changes the image of interracial friendships and hunting in South Africa. His experiences in the country have led him to share his newfound thought process on racial tension and the adventure of hunting with readers everywhere.
Gordon Bradford has been dreaming of an African safari for years. When he finally realizes his dream he travels to Africa with his handmade longbow and an open mind and heart. His first safari turns into a second, then a third, all the while he begins to have feelings for the wife of his guide, Lucas.
Gordon meets an older black man named Moses who shares advice and life lessons. Moses reveals his background, starting with his experience in the apartheid-torn country of South Africa. Gordon learns about the daily lives of people who run a remote bush camp in Africa, the relationships, love and respect they share with each other. Gordon realizes these people depend on each other for survival making race incidental. He enjoys life in the bushveld, but the entire camp is threatened when assault rifle carrying poachers insight an attack on the camp by members of a nearby village. Now the people, Gordon included, must devise a way to save the camp and each other.
Isham uses hunting and racial tension throughout his novel as a lesson for his readers to show that typically negative issues can be used in a positive way. There are ethereal connections with the prey animals offering their insight to life in the bushveld and lessons passed down from an old Cape buffalo to his young guardian as they travel together on the final journey of his life.
“It presents a positive perspective of white and black relationships in Africa and a very different perspective of hunting,” Isham says. “It offers insight into the lives of the people in an African bush country camp and how every member of the camp has value.”
