2010 marks the 50th anniversary of the Nebraska One Box Hunt, a unique outdoor sporting event that pits competitive teams of five hunters each against the clock, while limiting each team to one box of 25 shotgun shells, which is divided among the team members as they see fit. Points are awarded on the number of pheasants and quail bagged by each team. The competitive pheasant hunt takes place on Saturday, with other scheduled shooting and social events starting on Thursday including a trap shoot, sporting clays competition, a banquet and other activities. Teams and individuals must apply to be considered for acceptance in each year's hunt.
Participation in the Nebraska One Box Hunt is truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Once you have participated on a hunting team, you become a "past shooter" and can only participate in the Saturday One Box Hunt by invitation. Only one past shooter is allowed per team-and with hundreds of past shooters over the 50-year history of the event and a limited number of teams each year, the opportunity to shoot more than once as a new team member in the Nebraska One Box Hunt is rare indeed.
On the other hand, each year's event has special activities planned exclusively for past shooters. "This has created a great sense of camaraderie over the years and has ensured that we keep getting new teams and new hunters every year-growing the reputation and participation in the Nebraska One Box Hunt," Ulmer added.
Over its five-decade history, the hunt has featured a wide variety of celebrities, politicians, business leaders and entertainers on the teams including General Norman Schwarzkopf and General Curtis LeMay; astronauts Neil Armstrong, Wally Shirra and Gordon Cooper; baseball legends Johnny Bench, Steve Carlton and Tim McCarver; musician Dan Seals; actors James Drury and Slim Pickens; professional football players Walt Garrison, Bob Lilly, and Jay Novacek; and a score of governors and U.S. congressional representatives from across the nation.
Registration fees and a charity auction held during the event raise money that is reinvested in charitable projects that encourage participation in shooting sports and support youth programs and education. The event has awarded nearly $250,000 in area youth scholarships just since 1982.
The event helped build the One Box Gun Club, an outstanding shooting facility in Broken Bow, which also serves as the site for trap and clay shooting during the annual hunt. Dollars raised also provide thousands of dollars of support for habitat development and support hunter safety activities and a vibrant youth shooting program that sustains interest in hunting and shooting sports. "At one time there were eight Master Class Shooters in Nebraska-and four of them were from Broken Bow," said Paul Ulmer, 2010 chairman. "We've also been home to three of the last five national champion sporting clays youth teams.
