The Future of Wild Turkey Management and Hunting Access

National Wild Turkey Logo

The National Wild Turkey Federation has always worked hard for hunters and wildlife, especially the wild turkey. Since the start of this organization, both wild turkey and turkey hunter numbers have increased. This is a direct contribution of the NWTF's partners, volunteers, and local chapters who have been instrumental in the success of the NWTF and its goals. However, times are changing and the NWTF must change, too. Today, the NWTF has developed programs and is working with volunteers and partners to combat two sobering trends in hunting, decreased access to public and private lands and a decline in hunter numbers, which both contribute to each other.

Summer Habitat Conditions in Canada

July 20, 2007
With a few exceptions, brood-rearing habitat is good or better across Canada, and waterfowl production should be very good this year.  The 2007 Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey showed a 14 percent increase in breeding duck numbers over last year’s survey, and a 24 percent increase over the survey’s long term average.

RIFLES OWNED BY THREE LEGENDARY AFRICAN HUNTERS TO BE SOLD BY BONHAMS

Hunters who organised safaris for Theodore Roosevelt, Ernest Hemingway, George Eastman and Baron Rothschild Bonhams will be selling rifles that were once owned and used by arguably three of the most famous professional white hunters in African history, epitomising big game hunting in the early years of the 20th Century, at the next Sporting Guns Sale on 1st August. Bonhams will be selling the guns of professional hunters Philip Percival, James Sutherland and Major Gordon `Andy’ Anderson, who were legends in their own lifetimes because of their skills as white hunters at a time when Africa was the happy hunting ground of the worlds’ wealthy elite. Lot 277 is a pair of rifles that belonged to hunting legend Philip Percival (1860-1966). The pair of .450 (31⁄2in. No. 2 Nitro Express) boxlock ejector rifles by J. Lang is estimated to sell for £12,000 - 16,000. They are being sold by the late owner’s family. The makers have confirmed that the rifles were completed in 1927, as a pair, and that they were bought by Percival on 9th December 1927.

Kubota Tractor Corporation Takes Aggressive Leadership Role in Conservation with Quail Unlimited

Edgefield, SC (July 20, 2007)—“What Quail Unlimited is announcing today, can only be described as a ground-breaking conservation sponsorship initiative," stated Rocky Evans, President of Quail Unlimited (QU). “Kubota Tractor Corporation now leads the way by the activation of a major on-the-ground exclusive sponsorship commitment with Quail Unlimited. This is a very strong commitment to our nation’s wildlife and the habitat so desperately needed to sustain an outdoor way of life,” Evans said. “Not only are they supporting our wildlife heritage through a long-term commitment to QU

as our Official Tractor and Utility Vehicle corporate partner, but Kubota is committing hard resources to national, regional and local chapter programs. From their support to new grant initiatives, they are empowering our members to complete more habitat projects. But they did not stop there; we are so very honored to announce that Kubota will also be the presenting sponsor of our new Habitat Improvement Teams (HIT) nationwide, a concept to help private and public landowners learn how to complete habitat work on their lands. Kubota is a corporation whose exceptional products and conservation vision, combined with the expertise of QU, will quickly and directly have a landscape impact on our nation’s private and public forests, grasslands and farmlands in a most positive way,” emphasized Rocky. “World-renowned for their uncompromising quality, bold innovation and technical expertise, Kubota further brings an exceptional equipment source critical for habitat success,” concluded Evans. QU, through its dedicated chapter members coast to coast, is leading the charge to restore the natural habitat of wild quail, working with private landowners as well as state and federal agencies across the country with unprecedented partnerships. By putting on local events and fund-raisers, QU chapters raise conservation dollars that are then used for on-the-ground projects in their area.
