BALTIMORE, Md.— Marathon Petroleum Company, LLC recently received an award from the National Wild Turkey Federation recognizing the company's commitment to wildlife habitat and conservation. The Wild Turkey Woodland award was given November 13, 2007 at the Wildlife Habitat Council's Annual Conference in Baltimore, Maryland.

The Wildlife Habitat Council and the NWTF have been presenting this award for the last eight years to companies that demonstrate superior commitment to on-the-ground wildlife habitat and wild turkey management. Scott Vance, Director of Conservation Field Operations for the NWTF, presented the award and praised Marathon Petroleum for their dedication to wildlife conservation at their Palestine Neil Pit complex in Palestine, Ill.

"We at the NWTF are proud to have such great partnerships with companies like Marathon as we work together to ensure that wild turkeys and other wildlife continue to thrive," said Vance.

The Palestine Neil Pit complex has actively managed their 80-acre site to benefit wildlife for a number of years. In addition to working with NWTF biologists to carry out an excellent wild turkey management plan, they also plant trees, improve forest stands, control invasive plants and use prescribed fire control at their site. Over the past five years the company has planted more than 5,000 seedlings, erected almost 100 nest boxes, removed several acres of invasive buckthorn, planted food plots and provided educational trails and kiosks for visitors.

To improve the land even further, Marathon is active in the Wildlife Habitat Incentive Program. In addition, the site will also host activities such as the NWTF's JAKES and Wheelin' Sportsmen events. The JAKES program engages youth up to age 17 with fun and exciting outdoor activities, and Wheelin' Sportsmen provides people with disabilities the opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors.
